More Travel Information
From San Jose del Cabo (Los Cabos) by bus or rental car
Take a transport service to the bus terminal in San Jose del Cabo or to
Cabo San Lucas. Buses leave every one to two hours to La Paz during the day.
Overnight in La Paz (Hotel Lorimar approx $40 per night; Hacienda Bugambilia
$65 per night double; Palmira $79) or continue from the La Paz bus terminal
on to Loreto. Buses leave for north 3-4 times daily. Ask for current schedule
of La Paz / Loreto departures at the Cabo terminal and see if they can reserve
you a space if you wish to continue on without overnighting in La Paz. Taking
a taxi from La Paz bus terminal to hotels is easy and safe. Walking to some
hotels closer to the bus terminal is also do-able
(La Perla approx $85 per night;
El Angel Azul $100-$165 )
and for other budget-style downtown hotels.
Once you arrive in Loreto check in to a local hotel
(see list, or in your trip confirmation packet)
or, transfer to the listed hotel where we have rooms reserved prior to the
tour. Travel time by bus is about 2-3 hours from Los Cabos to La Paz, and 5 hours
from La Paz to Loreto. Bus fare La Paz - Loreto is about $45, and approx $25 from Cabo.
For car rentals from Los Cabos or La Paz see if you can arrange for a
drop-off rental with Budget, Hertz, or Eurocar, the agencies currently in Loreto.
It's usually not cost effective for just one person, but a great way to stop
and see some country along the way.
Other options for travel to Loreto may be - fly to Los Cabos (SJD), Baja,
Mexico and drive or bus up (7 hours driving time) or fly to Loreto from Cabo
San Lucas on Aereo Calafia. Fly to La Paz (LAP), Baja, Mexico and drive or
fly up on AereoCalafia.com.mx . Driving from La Paz to Loreto is approximately
5 hours. And, if you have the time - drive from San Diego south, about 750
miles, and enjoy the many desert ecosystems along the way.
From San Diego by bus
Take the downtown trolley to the Tijuana border. Walk across the border,
and get your tourist card stamped at the immigration office at the entrance
area. They can issue you a card and the necessary form to make a bank payment.
Cost is about $20 US. When the payment is made (there is a small bank branch at
the border where you can pay) you can either return to the border office or
continue on and (if driving) have the card stamped at the nearest next Immigration
check point, which might be at Guerrero Negro state line dividing Baja Norte
from Baja Sur, or in Loreto. Get your card stamped within 72 hours of border
crossing if possible.
If Busing - Take a taxi from the border to the Terminal Central de Autobus
located east of the city in the La Mesa area, not downtown. Buses leave 3-4
times daily and cost is approximately $150 US to Loreto.
